The coastal community of Kames and Tighnabruaich had been identified by Scottish Water as requiring new wastewater collection and treatment facilities in order to comply with the requirements of the Urban Wastewater Treatment Regulations in Scotland.

The new plant comprised the following:

The wastewater at Kames & Tighnabruaich was transferred to a new Secondary WwTW via four pumping stations in series.

Flow enters the treatment works and is recorded via a flow meter and is passed to four septic tanks by means of a distribution chamber.  The septic tanks retain settled sludge, which is removed periodically by means of tankers.

The main wastewater flow continues by gravity to a pumping station housing duty/standby pumps.  The SAF feed pumps transfer wastewater to two SAF units.  Flow from the SAF units gravitates to two final settlement tanks. The final effluent discharges through the same long sea outfall utilised for the final transfer pumping station.

This project includes:

  • Collection and Transfer Pipelines
  • Satellite and Transfer Submersible Pump Stations
  • Installation of Secondary Waste Water Treatment Plant
  • Installation of new Power Supplies
  • Installation of new MCC
  • New long sea outfalls
