Owing to an ever increasing population set to rise dramatically by 2015 a primary treatment plant was required in Eastbourne Marine Treatment Works.

The treatment works is located at the eastern end of Eastbourne sea front adjacent to the old Langley Point Pumping Station, thirty metres from the sea on one side and fifty metres from the urban development on the other. Wastewater from the town was delivered to the pumping station through three cast iron sewers dating from 1899. These sewers had to be diverted to the south of the site to allow the construction of the underground box structure that houses the treatment process.

This project was completed on a particularly challenging site and demanded a creative approach. Despite the limited space, efforts were still maintained to minimise impact on the surrounding area and the above ground structure was designed to resemble a Napoleonic Redoubt Fortress as mirrored along the South Coast.
